Record the measure as you take it, not the total afterwards

The value of a measured valuation is not the number, it is the record of how it was reached. Write down what you measured, where, and which record supported it, at the moment you measure it. A total with no workings is a firmer guess; a total with its measure attached is something an agreed line can be built on, and it holds the first time an item is questioned.
