I need to confirm a verbal instruction today
It was said on site this morning, the work starts tomorrow, and it has to be in writing before it isn't.
What's happening?
Someone with authority said it on site this morning: change the layout, use the other spec, get on with it. The work starts tomorrow. Today, everyone agrees what was said. In a month, the person who said it may remember it differently, or have moved to another job, or deny the conversation happened at all. The instruction is real right now, and it is evaporating.
Most contracts want instructions in writing, or confirmed in writing when they are given by word of mouth. A same-day confirmation does two jobs at once. It creates the record while the memory is shared, and it forces any disagreement into the open today, when the work can still pause, rather than at the valuation, when the money has been spent. Some standard forms go further and give an unanswered confirmation contractual force after a set period, which makes silence work for you for once.
A good confirmation is short and complete: what was instructed, who gave it, when and where, and the position on price and time reserved rather than guessed. Sent the same day it was given, every time, it turns the most fragile kind of instruction into the best-evidenced kind.
