Confirm instructions in writing the day you get them

A verbal instruction on site is worth exactly what you can prove of it later. Send a short confirmation the same day: this is what I was told to do, by whom, when, and how I am treating it. That two-minute confirmation decides, months later, whether a change was a variation or a favour.
